This summer was a season of discovery. In the past, I used to just accept my oily skin for what it was and tried to bear with it throughout the hot, humid summer days. This year, I decided to put that lazy habit behind me and start investing in a couple of products that have changed the way and what I wear on my face during the summer. I made some pretty sweet discoveries along the way and have found some of the most amazing gems at Sephora and the drugstore. I’m super happy with my roundup of go-to products for the summer as they’re probably going to become some of my most necessary staples in my regular routine for the remainder of the year. Before I go to bed, I always cleanse my face and “treat” it after with AHAVA’s Time To Treat Comforting Cream. While yes I do have oily skin, it’s still necessary to moisturize your face so your skin won’t produce excess oil. It’s already extremely humid in Houston, so taking precautions to avoid a greasy face is one of the best things you can do for your makeup’s longevity.
Before I apply my foundation, I layer the Smashbox Pore Minimizing Primer as a light base. I put just enough to see a difference in my pores and my skin texture, which this primer really excels at. Throughout the day I’ve noticed a difference of when I do and don’t have this under my foundations and it’s a huge difference in the longevity of a fresh looking face.
Taking care of my skin for the past few months has really gotten me to my comfort zone of not feeling like I needed a “full coverage” face everyday. While I LOVE my L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte and have said amazing things about it in a past blog post, I started to dive into the world of BB creams. They went through this huge phase a few summers ago and I never really bothered with them because I just wasn’t pleased with my skin texture enough to brave a light-coverage foundation.
After looking through several product reviews, The Covergirl Clean Matte BB Cream had the ratings that I was looking for. It checked all the boxes in terms of keeping my skin matte all day, but it also didn’t have the sheerest coverage like other BB creams. After months of trying it out, I have actually started reaching for it more than my Infallible! Not because it’s better, but I like it for reasons of it’s own. It’s perfect for the hot, humid summer days where you just want to slap something on your face to even out your skin tone but still keep a fresh face look all day. It does a really good job of keeping my skin matte for majority of the day, but I do have to blot after the 6 hour mark which is reasonable considering my skin type and the weather.
This summer I also started diving into the arts of “baking”. As you can imagine, I was literally trying every single technique out there to avoid my problematic oily face throughout the day. I didn’t want to deal with the fuss of having to buy blotting papers all the time, over-powdering my skin causing it to look cakey, etc. So I finally broke and decided that spending an extra 15 minutes on my routine would be fine if it meant less struggling. After trying several setting powders, I finally honed into the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder. It’s so finely milled that it almost feels like I’m not applying anything to my face at first and even when I’m done baking, it just feels like a really really light layer but nothing that’s bothersome throughout the day. I don’t have the tinted version, but I think this is perfect for setting my under-eyes and baking afterwards. I will say that it is very fragrant, but since I’m not sensitive to smells, it hasn’t bothered me.
For the rest of my face, I love setting it with Maybelline’s Better Skin Powder. It’s honestly probably the best powder that I have ever used. This is actually going to go into my permanent regular routine after this summer. It’s packaging is light, the coverage is amazing for touch-ups and just the formula itself is nothing like I’ve tried before. I’m completely in love and definitely recommend for any skin types!
The Naked 3 has probably been the staple that I have stuck with before this summer. I remember using the deeper shades more in the fall and as we transitioned into the summer, I caught myself grabbing this palette more and more for it’s shimmery pinky shades. There is a tiny bit of fall-out but nothing that a fan brush can’t sweep off. If you’re beginning to dive into plummy shades, I definitely recommend the Naked 3 as it has just the right amount of sparkly and matte shades along with some of the best transition shades for those mauvy eye looks.
From the creamy formula to the lasting power, I have fallen completely in love with WetnWild’s MegaGlo Highlighting Powders! These are limited edition, but I’ve seen people still snatching them up in their local CVS or Walgreens so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to mention so you can keep your eyes out for these drugstore gems. Both shades are beautiful for different occasions. I love wearing Precious Petals during the day and Crown of my Canopy at night to give me a bronzier glow. What has really shocked me the most about these highlighters is their lasting power. Somehow the products on my cheeks are always the first to go, but these actually don’t start to fade until the end of the day when I’m about ready to touch up for the evening. If you’re all in with the highlighter craze right now, I urge you to shop around your nearest drugstore and see if you can find these in their limited edition display!
The Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Chihuahua is a beautiful everyday color that has been worn with probably 90% of my looks this summer. It’s the perfect pink shade that’s almost considered a neutral in my book. I don’t think it’s warm, nor cool enough for me to be wary of what I wear with it. It’s just one of those lipsticks that you’ll probably end up buying multiples of to store in your purse, your vanity and your office. If that wasn’t enough to convince you, the application is almost always seamless. I never had to worry about blending or making a mistake that wasn’t fixable.
A really great trick that I started implementing to my regular makeup routine at the beginning of the summer was to start using a finishing spray. However, the real trick was to spray it before applying anything on my face and to also spray it once completely done. Not only did this help my makeup last literally all-day, but it controlled my oil so well, I eventually expected to blot only once during the later part of the day. If you’re looking for something that will help with longevity and oil-control, I definitely recommend the Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray.
As a little added bonus, I wanted to include one of my most favorite accessories that I wore this summer. These little Kate Spade crab studs (you can find similar ones here) were such a huge statement piece on those days that the heat called for a messy bun, but when I still wanted a semi-polished look. Putting these cuties on pulled my look together so well with every outfit I chose. From a t-shirt and shorts to simple casual dresses, these pearly golden crab studs gave me an instant oomph to my daily attempts to look cute in this godforsaken heat. ?
